Job Classifications
On-campus jobs usually fall into a few main classifications: Campus Work-Study (budgeted and paid for by Cal Lutheran), Federal Work-Study (paid for by the government, requires a FAFSA), Graduate Assistantship, Resident Assistant, and Departmental Assistant.
Federal Work-Study
Most positions are considered Federal Work-Study (FWS) eligible unless they are within the University Advancement Office, Campus Ministry, Campus Services, PLTS, or within a grant-funded program such as TRIO, Student Support Services, or Upward Bound (for example).
In order to be considered for Federal Work-Study, a student must:
- File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be determined to have Financial Need
- Be enrolled part-time (in at least 6 units per semester for undergraduates)
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Be compliant with Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Not be in default on a student loan
- Submit all documents required by the Office of Financial Aid pertaining to Verification
Note: Students are unable to apply Work-Study earnings towards their tuition cost prior
to earning the wages. Since FWS wages are earned during the course of the semester
(and each student's tuition bill is due before the semester begins) students should
make other arrangements for payment.
Graduate Assistantships
A Graduate Assistantship is similar to a work-study position except that the position is more aligned with your field of study and requires a higher level of expertise. The terms and conditions of a graduate assistantship position will vary depending on the school but in general, this type of role will provide you with part-time, paid work experiences in your field of study, and allow you to apply your knowledge and skills in your discipline.
Positions are posted on CLUPostings.com, but they may also be found through checking with your respective graduate program.
- Graduate Assistantships are reserved for currently enrolled graduate students, and opportunities can be found with specific graduate programs or certain offices on campus such as Career Services or EEIR (Educational Effectiveness and Institutional Research).
- Graduate Assistantships are paid at a rate of $18.00/Hour
