Let's Celebrate the Year of the Snake at Cal Lutheran
January 29 - February 12, 2025
2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake, starting from Wednesday, January 29, 2025, and ending on February 1, 2026. The Snake symbolizes wisdom, intuition, and elegance in Chinese culture. It is said to bring a year of reflection and growth. The 15-day Lunar New Year celebration culminates with the Lantern Festival on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, which marks the end of the festivities. (Source).
Find below the schedule of festivities for the CLU Lunar New Year celebration on Friday, February 7, on campus from 12pm-2pm in the Student Union.

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION | FRIDAY, FEB. 07
CLU KINGSMEN PARK* | 12 PM - 2 PM
Join the Center for Global Engagement in collaboration with Student Life for the CLU Lunar New Year Celebration on Friday, February 7 in Kingsmen Park. [*Note: The program will move to the CLU Kwan Fong Gallery if there is inclement weather.] Admission is free and all are welcome! See below for some of the activities planned: |
- Snake Image Coloring Station: Let your creativity fly by coloring snake-themed designs to honor the
Year of the Snake. - Chopstick Challenge: Test your skills by picking up small objects using chopsticks. A fun
competition with prizes for the quickest hands! - Fortune Picking: Find your fortune for the year! Who knows what luck and wisdom the Snake
will bring you? - Taiko Drummers: Enjoy a performance from the Oxnard Togen Daiko drum Group, including an
opportunity for interested students to learn how to play a tune. - Chinese Dumplings: Welcome good fortune for the new year by eating lucky food items,
available for the first 200 guests.

LOCAL COMMUNITY CELEBRATORY DATES
JAN 29: Chinese New Year's Day | FEB 12: The Lantern Festival
The Lunar New Year Eve (JAN 28) is the start of the spring festival that began 3,500 years ago. This is the most important date of the celebrations. Current customs focus on family reunions and gathering together as a community with the official year welcomed at midnight.
New Year's Day is a day for visiting with family and friends, sharing gifts and offering respects at family graves. Each day includes special significane with associated activty for the community, laeding up to the final day of the celebrations.
On Wednesday, February 12, the Lantern Festival is celebrated to close out the festivities. Traditional customs include hanging colorful lanterns with messages/riddles written on them, eating sweet rice balls, watching dragon/lion dances, and enjoying fireworks!
