International Education Week 2024 | NOVEMBER 18 - 22 2024
International Education Week (IEW) is a national opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
This week is a chance for Cal Lutheran to commemorate the cultures represented on campus and learn about the differences that make the community beautiful. The Center for Global Engagement in collaboration with Cal Lutheran partners invites you to engage in global learning by attending various programs throughout the week.

OEA Faculty-Led Programs Workshop

The Office of Education Abroad (OEA) is soliciting future proposals for faculty-led programs abroad or domestically. Faculty-led programs are opportunities for CLU faculty to expand students' global learning by providing opportunities for students to travel with their faculty member while engaging in scholarly learning. Faculty are invited to join us to learn how to draft a strong proposal submission.A Global History of Chocolate: An Interactive, Multi-Sensory Experience

Register now to join us for a chocolate tasting featuring chocolates from different regions while learning about the history and evolution of chocolate over the centuries. This guided experience includes chocolate pairing with fruits as well as an exploration of various flavor profiles and textures. You can watch a brief video from a recent experience here.

World Aids Day Event Series

Cal Lutheran's Center for Equality & Justice and Public Health Program invite everyone to together for an educational and reflective gathering. Since 1988 communities around the world have united to battle AIDS. CLU offers an opportunity to learn more about Public Health Careers during an advocacy reception, followed by a keynote presentation by Dr. Nina Harawa and Lawrence Dotson and closing candlelight vigil. Sustainable Fashion Festival: Styling Workshop

HUB101 is hosting a Sustainable Fashion Festival. Three days of events will feature inspiring workshops, thought-provoking speakers and a captivating sustainable fashion showcase. On Tuesday, Charline Zeroual, a French personal stylist based in LA, will focus on empowering women through sustainable fashion, helping them shop consciously and embrace wardrobe minimalism.

Lutheran College Washington Semester Information Session

The Lutheran College Washington Semester (LCWS) gives students the opportunity to spend a semester in Washington, D.C., pairing academic study with an intensive four-day-a-week internship. With access to over 500 organizations, LCWS works with students from all majors to secure internships that align with their career goals, providing professional experience in fields that interest them. Beyond internships, LCWS ensures students make the most of D.C. by organizing field trips, lectures, and seminars every Friday. These events introduce students to D.C.'s rich culture, politics, arts, social justice initiatives, science and technology, and more, adding depth to their experience in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.
Learn about the opportunities for academic engagement with the Lutheran College Washington Semester in Washington, DC. Whether for a faculty-led program, summer research in DC, or promotion of internships, faculty and students are invited to join us. Fulbright-Hays Faculty & Administrator Grant Information Session
Center for Global Engagement Conference Room 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Post-secondary faculty (with preference for the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences) and administrators (e.g., staff with internationalization emphasis/focus in their work such as career/academic advisors, librarians, tutors, etc.) are invited to apply for the Fulbright-Hays summer seminar abroad program for four weeks in Greece and Turkey (in June/July, dates TBA). The program provides an in-depth exploration of a country to improve understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures. Following the seminar experience, participants develop and share a project to provide information about the selected country at one's institution and/or within one's local community in the USA.

Indigenous People's Heritage Month Lecture Lunch

Join Campus Ministry for lunch after chapel to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Month with keynote speaker Dayna Barrios, Native community leader and the former chairwoman for the Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians. Barrios will share stories about her Chumash ancestors and how faith has been present in their traditions and culture.
This is a great opportunity to learn about California Native History and heritage, as we continue to build a beloved community under the theme of Healing and Restoration. This event will present information to spark the audience's curiosity and invite them to reflect on how faith inspires communities and individuals throughout history.
I Can't Fly Anymore: Navigating U.S. Immigration Policies and Travel Restrictions

Associate Professor of Criminology and Justice Studies, California State University Northridge
In this session, the presenters will share how U.S. immigration laws and policies have historically restricted immigrants' ability to travel within the United States and internationally. The presenters will also discuss how immigrants today with different legal statuses have been unable to travel domestically and internationally without governmental permission. The event will highlight the Office of Education Abroad's IIE Passport Project.

Individuals showcase the beauty and diversity of various countries for attendees to learn interesting cultural facts while enjoying performances and international cuisine.

Paz Con La Naturaleza: Biodiversity and Climate Change
The CLU Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) offers many social justice, educational opportunities throughout the year. Several presentations are featured on the PLTS Center for Climate Justice and Faith website.
One interview is provided for IEW viewing: On October 29th, Rev. Dr. Neddy Astudillo interviewed Eliana Alvarez Grueso, a biologist with an expertise in biodiversity and climate change and Nathaly Quito of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Colombia live from the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia.
GLobal Cuisine on Campus
Our CLU campus dining partners, Sodexo, offer international cuisine options daily, with a daily Italian zone, a vegan/vegetarian section, and Mongolian Grill, often featuring global delights. During International Education Week, Sodexo is creating menu options to celebrate the country-cultures of CLU in Ullman Commons.
Countries with the largest representation at CLU include India, China, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Taiwan. Visit the OISS website to learn more about who is studying at CLU.
