Tour of the Kingdom of Pylos Exhibition at the Getty Villa

We are offering a special tour of the Getty Villa's Kingdom of Pylos Exhibition!
Encounter the latest discoveries from Messenia, an epicenter of Mycenaean civilization in Late Bronze Age Greece, displayed for the first time outside Europe. Archaeology and cutting-edge science reveal the world of the Griffin Warrior, whose grave held offerings of incomparable artistry. The tour is open to all FAB students, but students who were in Scott Jones' Spring Course "The Technology of Ancient Art" are encouraged to attend.
This tour will take place on Friday, August 22 at 10am. Cost for the tour is $5 per person; parking is free. This is a drive yourself tour, and students are encouraged to carpool if possible.
Space is limited, and liability waivers are required. Location and parking details are sent out to registrants a few days prior to the tour.

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that can help improve flexibility, mobility, strength, as well as decrease stress and reduce joint strain. No prior yoga experience is necessary. All are welcome. Please join certified yoga instructor Anyez Klevecz to practice seated yoga poses, breath work, and some standing postures and movements using the chairs for support.
Anyez is a yoga alliance certified yoga teacher and has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. She is passionate about supporting students in their journey to better health and peace of mind. She is a student of yoga philosophy, ayurveda, mindfulness, and many holistic approaches to bring more ease to our modern lifestyle.
Pricing for the Each 4-Week Series: $36

Virtual classes will take place virtually on Zoom. You will need an unobstructed space, a sturdy chair, and preferably a camera set-up so the instructor can see you (but it is not required). The virtual class will be recorded, and each recording will be available for 2 weeks after it is posted.
In-Person classes will take place in-person at Cal Lutheran's Thousand Oaks campus.
Early Fall Intro to Qigong & Tai Chi for Fall Prevention with Jim Belsley

Intro to Qigong (with Light Tai Chi): 9:45-10:45am
Tai Chi for Fall Prevention: 11am-12pm
Intro to Qigong (with Light Tai Chi): Tai Chi and Qigong are two forms of exercise recommended by the Harvard Medical School. In this introductory course, we'll use gentle, flowing movements to develop balance, flexibility and strength while learning techniques to release stress and cultivate more energy. Develop and embody mindfulness using posture, movement, and breathing techniques from these beautiful arts. Those new to Tai Chi should begin with this level one class only.
The five-week class will be cumulative, building upon the skills learned the previous week in each class.
Tai Chi for Fall Prevention: Practicing Tai Chi on a regular basis can bring many health benefits. This class will focus on Tai Chi movements to help with fall prevention. You will learn simple movements to help improve balance and mindful awareness of weight transference while stepping. With regular practice, you can increase your strength, flexibility, and mental focus. No experience necessary.
The five-week class will be cumulative, building upon the skills learned the previous week in each class.

Behind the Scenes Tour of the Ventura County Crime Lab Accompanied by Dr. Jose Torres

Step inside the fascinating world of forensic science with an exclusive guided tour of the Ventura County Crime Lab. This rare opportunity takes you behind the scenes to see how evidence is analyzed, cases are built, and justice is served. Dr. Jose Torres will help faciliate the tour alongside the crime lab staff.
Your journey will include visits to the lab’s specialized units: Toxicology, DNA Analysis, Controlled Substances, Firearms and Toolmarks, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), and Forensic Alcohol. In each area, you’ll witness the meticulous work of forensic experts as they perform testing, operate advanced instrumentation, and apply scientific methods to real-world investigations.
Along the way, you’ll learn how toxicologists detect drugs, how DNA is extracted and matched to suspects, and how firearms are examined for ballistic evidence. You’ll also explore the critical role CSI specialists play in collecting and preserving evidence from crime scenes.
The tour will feature live demonstrations, offering a front-row view of the technology, techniques, and dedication that make modern forensic science possible. Whether you’re a criminal justice professional, a student, or simply curious about how science solves crimes, this immersive experience will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the complex work that happens inside the crime lab.
Dr. Jose Torres is the Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Criminology and Justice Studies in the Bachelor's Degree for Professionals Program at California Lutheran University. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society and an M.A. in Social Ecology from UC Irvine, along with dual B.A.s in Sociology and Central American Studies from Cal State Northridge. His research focuses on the impacts of the U.S. immigration and criminal justice systems on Latina/o families.
