School of Management Advisory Council Awards for Outstanding Achievements
Annually, the School of Management Advisory Council honors three most outstanding faculty colleagues for their achievements in three categories – Teaching, Research, and Service – based on a rigorous nomination and selection process. We are proud of our faculty who always give their best!
2024 Award Recipients
Dan Hamilton
Director and Professor
Dan Hamilton is the recipient of the 2024 Faculty Award for Research. Having joined the School
of Management 15 years ago, this Hamilton has worked tirelessly – often behind the
scenes – to develop sophisticated models that have earned a center that he is associated
with many an award. From the Zillow Crystal Ball Award to the National Association
of Business Economists mention as 2nd most accurate forecasting house nationwide to the acceptance of our Center for Economic
Research and Forecasting into the Wall Street Journal’s panel of economic forecasters,
He has provided the research behind what have become the most accurate economic forecasts
for the county, the state, and the nation as well as the groundbreaking Latino GDP
– and now also the Latina GDP – reports that only in the last year have resulted in
hundreds of media mentions and presentations in front of more than 13,000 event participants.
The research that our honoree engages in impresses with its unique combination of
the highest rigor and absolute relevance. His research has earned national recognition,
and has inspired many a student who he worked with.
Tracy Nickl
Assistant Professor, School of Managment
Tracy Nickl is the recipient of the 2024 Faculty Award for Teaching. During a long and impressive career on Wall Street, our recipient has honed their skills in training and development, coaching and mentoring. But since Wall Street may not have been challenging enough, our honoree decided to pursue a Ph.D. in Management and join academia. SHE hit the ground running. Teaching a full load of courses while still finishing her doctoral studies, our honoree earned the highest praise from her students. Our honoree excelled through bringing guest speakers to her courses, integrating applied projects, and integrating a demanding business simulation. Teaching never ends for her when a class is over. She has mentored many students individually, help them to find internships and job placements, wrote letters of recommendation, opened her network for mentorships, served as faculty advisor for the student chapter of the American Marketing Association, and she even was instrumental in building bridges to prospective students through Future Business Leaders of America or the SOM Brand Ambassador initiative. Through her engagement and energy, she has become a role model for many of us.
Vlad Vaiman
Professor
Vlad Vaiman is the recipient of the 2024 Faculty Award for Service. He has repeatedly raised his hand and stepped up when his time and expertise was needed. From being instrumental in the design of our Executive MBA and MSM programs and a redesign of our MBA program to overseeing all graduate programs at the School of Management for many years in his role as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs to serving as interim program director for the MBA, MSM, and EMBA programs on several occasions to now stepping into the permanent role of program director, he was never hesitant to take on additional responsibilities. Beyond his immediate responsibilities he has been of service to the university by serving as a Convocator and on many formal and informal committees and task forces. Locally, he has served as the Vice-Chair of the Ventura County Economic Development Association (VCEDA) for many years. He has also served his professional and academic community outside of Cal Lutheran well – as the Founding Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editorial Consultant of the European Journal of International Management, the Chair of the EIASM Workshop on Talent Management, and the Editor of the Talent Management Series at Emerald Publications, among others, he is a known quantity among his peers worldwide, putting Cal Lutheran on the global map.
Ed Julius
Professor of Accounting, Emeritus
Ed Julius is the recipient of the 2024 Chuck Maxey Lifetime Achievement Award. The Chuck Maxey Lifetime
Achievement Award is one that is not presented annually. It is only presented in those rare cases when a faculty member leaves the university
and when they have shown exceptional commitment to the university, the School of Management and their profession over many years.
A Professor at the School of Management who accomplished the not so easy task of helping
students to develop a love for Accounting. To many, he has become the reason why they
embarked on impressive careers in the profession. He has published four books on rapid
calculation, which collectively appear in nine languages. A long-time sports enthusiast,
our award recipient processed athletic eligibility at Cal Lutheran for more than a
decade, and he has served as faculty mentor to our softball and tennis teams for a
number of years. In addition, he has served on the Advancement, Rank and Tenure Committee
for longer than most anybody at Cal Lutheran, a committee he has chaired seven times.
He founded Cal Lutheran’s student-run Accounting Association in 1984, and he has served
as its faculty adviser for many years. A graduate of Rutgers and UPenn’s Wharton Business
School, our honoree was the recipient of the School of Management’s Excellence in
Teaching Award in 2015. Most importantly, he has been a mentor and a guide to students
and colleagues alike, always kind, always professional, always a gentleman.
Rosie Baker
Communications Coordinator, School of Management
Rosie Baker is the recipient of the 2024 Staff Award. In 2023, the School of Management added an award category for our hard-working and dedicated staff members. In the nomination and selection process, a faculty committee evaluates variables such as alignment with the vision and mission of the university and the School of Management; outstanding service to students, faculty, adjunct professors, and staff colleagues; productivity, creativity, and commitment. This year’s recipient has excelled in many categories, and it is hard to believe how much SHE has achieved in just about two years at the School of Management. She is a one-woman marketing machine. Overseeing an immense portfolio that ranges from stakeholder communication, newsletters, graphics, marketing materials, and presentations to the design and implementation of innovative social media strategies to the organization of an impressive portfolio of student-and community-focused events, our honoree not only always gets it done, but she also gets it done with grace and a smile on her face. When our award recipient joined us, she was barely not a student anymore herself, but in her time at the School of Management has quickly developed leadership qualities that many a student worker or graduate assistant has learned from. As her staff colleagues wrote in the nomination: “She is incredibly sweet and kind to everyone” and “Her work ethic is excellent, and she consistently works well with all team members, always doing excellent work. She is a wonderful coworker”.
