Faculty Grants
The proceeds of charitable events such as the annual Hats and High Tea and Golf Tournament are sponsored by the Community Leaders Association to support the Cal Lutheran's academic progams and its students.
Over the years, the support of the Community Leaders Association has resulted in the donation of nearly $2 million toward enhancements in equipment and technology. In addition to providing funding for the academic departments at Cal Lutheran, the Association also awards faculty grants each year to faculty who are involved with and are committed to the community. 2020 Faculty Grant Recipients
- Project Title: Financial Planning Software MoneyGuidePro
- Project Description: The funds will be used to purchase at least one user license for the industry-leading financial planning software MoneyGuidePro. Ten CFP practitioners will pair with 10 students to provide pro bono financial planning services to low income and underrepresented members of our community. We expect MGP to provide us complimentary software during the 2020 Spring pilot. Clients of Cal Lutheran's Community Counseling Center will benefit from these financial planning services.
- Project Title: California Reading and Literature Project
- Project Description: The CLA funds will be used for the successful California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP) which has been held within the Graduate School of Education for the past 20 years. The Department of Learning and Teaching offers professional development to CLU teacher candidates and over 600 local TK-12 teachers and administrators from all school districts in Ventura County. This grant will help pay guest speaker Lauren Markham’s fees, travel costs, and accommodations as well as the cost of refreshments at the event. All Cal Lutheran students, faculty, staff, and alumni can attend free of charge.

- Project 1 Title: Conference of the Society for Arts
- Project 1 Description: Cal Lutheran will host the annual conference of the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Educators (SAEE) on Oct. 16-17, 2020. Around 70 arts entrepreneurship educators from around the world will share their experiences teaching entrepreneurship to arts students. The CLA funding will be applied toward conference expenses for this two-day event. It is an opportunity to showcase the campus and our talented students as well as for the Center for Entrepreneurship and the Creative Arts Division to collaborate. Students in the School of Management’s Hospitality and Tourism Program will help plan the logistics of the event.
- Project 2 Title: New Venture Competition

Project 2 Description: The funds will be used to continue the successful New Venture Fair (NVF), an annual expo-style format for aspiring entrepreneurs who want to share their startup ideas with the community. In addition to undergraduate student teams, we have divisions for domestic and international graduate students and local high school students. European international MBA students are required to participate. In 2019, 46 teams participated in the NVF and more than 150 faculty, staff and community members attended. The NVF reflects Cal Lutheran’s emphasis on equity and inclusion.
- Project Title: SoCal Philosophy Academy
- Project Description: The funds will be used to help support the second annual SoCal Philosophy Academy for local high school students. The goal of the academy is to expose students to the study of philosophy, give them additional exposure to CLU, and help them continue to develop the communication and critical thinking skills necessary for post-secondary education and/or their vocation and career.
- Project Title: Link Between Diversity and Innovation
- Project Description: This funding will be used to prepare and host a conference/festival celebrating the link between diversity and innovation. The funds will be used for three main purposes: To cover the cost of bringing an appropriate speaker(s) to the event; To cover the cost of food and any logistics necessary to host the event; And to cover the cost of entertainment. The plan is to invite a musician or band that embodies the link between diversity and innovation and to create a festive environment for engaging discussion on these topics.
- Project Title: Journalism Training
- Project Description: This CLA grant will be used to coordinate the second annual journalism training program for college students by subsidizing travel and providing a meal for participants. The program is hosted at Pepperdine because their campus has a dedicated communication building that provides space and resources for training in print journalism, broadcasting and podcasting. This event hosts students from CLU, Cal Baptist, Loyola Marymount, and other colleges in Southern California.
- Project Title: "Homelessness and the Housing Crisis in Hollywood"
- Project Description: The funds will support our third annual “Homelessness and the Housing Crisis in Hollywood,” an experiential learning program for 80-100 CLU students. This co-curricular event involves five professors and their 5-6 classes in partnership with Hope Lutheran Church in Hollywood.
